Library of Congress releases rare collection of Frances Benjamin Johnston’s photos online

WASHINGTON — The Library of Congress is releasing a rare collection of hand-colored glass-plate lantern slides of American gardens from the pioneering photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston on the photo-sharing website Flickr for the first time.

The pictures will be released Friday on Flickr. It comes a week after the library made the collection of 1,000 slides available on its own website.

Johnston was one of the first professional female photographers to achieve international prominence. The library holds Johnston’s personal papers and about 20,000 photographs.

The color slides have not been seen since Johnston last projected them during lectures in the 1910s to 1930s to rally Americans to grow gardens on tenement lots, in rowhouse yards and in parks, which had deteriorated from industrial pollution and neglect during the Gilded Age.
